Preservation Efforts

The $2.7 million Mulberry Street Cemetery restoration project was a major initiative aimed at revitalizing and preserving the cemetery and highlighting its historical significance while honoring those laid to rest here. This project incorporated education elements, showcased regional and local history and created a public space for shared community engagement.

Informational Kiosk Installed

March, 2025

A kiosk for sharing the history of Mulberry Street Cemetery is installed near the Horace King Bridge. This will be an important resource to visitors and tour groups.

Pathway Construction

February, 2025

Construction continues on a path that leads visitors from the covered bridge and Horace King’s gravesite, along the creek, to the east side of the cemetery.

The first grave markers are delivered

January, 2025

In late January, the first delivery of grave markers was made to the cemetery site. These markers will serve as memorials for the hundreds of unmarked graves throughout the cemetery.

Boardwalk Construction Continues

January 15, 2025

The boardwalk that bisects Mulberry Street Cemetery is constructed. Closer to the bridge, a foundation is poured for a future structure.

Construction Scrim Installed

November, 2024

Continued efforts to preserve the site during construction included the installation of a stylized construction scrim, which also served the purpose of beginning the education process among locals and visitors about the importance of the site.

Site Preservation

October, 2024

Before restoration began, efforts were made to preserve the beauty and historically significant features of the cemetery, including the removal of several large trees.

Hundreds of unmarked gravesites line the grassy hillside of Mulberry Street Cemetery. Thanks to ground penetrating radar, we know the locations of these sites; however, we do not know the identification of these individuals. Please contact Troup County Archives if you have information about individuals who may be buried here.
